Klondike Canyon Geological Hazard Abatement District (KCGHAD), commonly referred as KCLAD, was formed in 1981 as a California State Geological Hazard Abatement District for the 50 acre Klondike Canyon Landslide. KCGHAD exists to manage ongoing geological challenges and maintain the public infrastructure needed to protect the 170 homes that are impacted by the land.

A Geologic Hazard Abatement District (GHAD )is an independent, state-level public agency that oversees geologic hazard prevention, mitigation, abatement and control. GHADs operate with a focus on the prevention of geologic hazards, with mitigation and abatement also being primary functions. A “geologic hazard” is broadly defined as an actual or threatened landslide, land subsidence, soil erosion, earthquake, fault movement or any other natural or unnatural movement of land or earth. GHADs are potentially useful tools to effectively abate a landslide hazard that crosses property boundaries. It is a mechanism that responds to the physical realities of landslides, and allows property owners to cooperate in solving a common problem. KCGHAD is a geological hazard abatement district (GHAD) formed in 1981 and is located in Rancho Palos Verdes. KCGHAD consists of the land mass known as Klondike Canyon, which is nestled between the larger Portuguese Bend Landslide and the Seaview community. The canyon stretches from just below Rolling Hills Estates and extends to the ocean through Portuguese Bend Beach Club. KCGHAD has 107 homes in its district and was created to help prevent and mitigate ongoing land movement and property damage.
KCGHAD is involved in a range of initiatives to mitigate land movement. Our 2024 5 Point Project Plan is focused on addressing key areas of the canyon that need immediate attention. Access this Project Plan above.
